About “A Bird’s-Eye View” - Grade 1 Band

The South Allegheny band program recently commissioned a musical piece to honor Karen Kadar, an elementary band director who dedicated 30 years of her life to the South Allegheny School District (Pittsburgh, PA) band program. As a dedicated birdwatcher and music educator, Karen's unique interests were incorporated into the piece written for the beginning band.

Karen's perspective on teaching beginners inspired the idea behind the piece. As students progress, they "leave the nest" to continue their musical interactions with the world. This idea is similar to looking down from a bird's perspective in flight and seeing the big picture. The piece aims to capture this sentiment and honor Karen's contributions to music education.

Jessica Kovacs contacted me, worked closely with the commissioning ensemble to create a piece highlighting Karen's interests, and honored her dedication to music education. The piece includes various percussion instruments, including Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Cymbals, Bird Call, Tambourine, and other trinkets that can be layered (optional) with additional performers.

The Bird Call, which is not heard in the mock-up, can be played by multiple players using various bird sound makers. The conductor should use their best judgment to shape this element of the piece based on the number of performers and sound makers available.

The piece focuses on an articulative idea carried through the work, making it fun and engaging for beginners to play as they develop some basic skills. It is also written in the Key of Eb major and includes other fun elements to dissect as you dig into the introductory sessions of ensemble playing.

In conclusion, Karen Kadar's 30 years of service to music education are a testament to her dedication and love for the art. This musical tribute, commissioned by the South Allegheny H.S. Band Parents Inc., is a fitting way to honor Karen and celebrate her contributions to the South Allegheny School District band program. We thank Karen for her years of service and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
