2023 in review
At the end of another year, I think it is only natural to take a moment and reflect on the journey traveled at this marker and the experiences that have had a role in shaping us. For me, 2023 has been filled with a roller coaster of emotions, marked by moments of heartache, hope, and adventure. In this post, I reflect on the past year with gratitude for the lessons learned and the connections forged. Then, at the bottom, list my favorite professional/musical moments from this last year.
On Heartbreak and Loss
The passing of Steve Gage was undoubtedly one of the most profound losses I faced this year. His sudden departure created a void in the lives of many, and the weight of grief was, at times, overwhelming. Even now, I find myself in the process of coming to terms with that loss. Amidst the mourning, solace can be found in the collective grieving process. It has become increasingly evident to me that loss and heartbreak are integral parts of the human experience. They serve as the backdrop against which we can genuinely begin to comprehend and appreciate the beauty of life itself. Without a doubt, this perspective is often elusive when we are immersed in sorrow, and sorrow comes in waves, to be sure. It reminds me how crucial it is to support those in their grief, guiding them through the valleys of despair with empathy and kindness, offering a helping hand, or simply giving them the time and space to find their own way. We learn just as much from traversing the valleys as we do from reaching the peaks; it all contributes to the dissonance and consonance that give meaning and context to our lives.
On Hope and Adventure
I embarked on a new adventure—my first semester as a DMA student at West Virginia University. Despite the puzzling decisions made by the university administration, the music school has proven to be an inspiring place, filled with dedicated faculty and like-minded students. While my academic journey may not follow the most traditional path, with a decade-long gap between my bachelor's and master's degrees, I've come to appreciate the perspective I currently have on this journey. I eagerly anticipate the years of exploration and development that lie ahead. Each day reaffirms my belief in the transformative power of education and knowledge.
On Love and Reconnection
Profound moments, for me, are defined by who we share them with and the context in which they occur. I am profoundly grateful for the unwavering support and boundless love of Bethany, Gavan, and Maia. Their presence in my life has been a source of strength, inspiring me to live with courage and kindness this year. Additionally, the past year provided an opportunity to reconnect with old friends, make new connections, and remain connected with dear friends. I hope that this year, I can continue to stay connected and reconnect with even more of you.
Professional Year-End Highlights:
The past year has been an exciting journey filled with incredible musical experiences and opportunities for growth. One highlight was the unforgettable collaboration between the TRYPO Wind Symphony and United States Air Force members in Washington, D.C. It was a privilege to share the performance with talented individuals. The TRYPO students are off to a great start this fall, also!

I had the pleasure of visiting several schools across the United States where "Spark and Fire" was being performed, and each residency brought its unique moments and connections. I am grateful for the warm welcome and the chance to connect with students and faculty at:
Messiah University, under the guidance of Dr. James Colonna, who conducted the original concept with the antiphonal choir!
Slippery Rock University, led by Dr. Jonathan Helmick, has tremendously supported my music.
Northwestern University, where Dr. Shawn Vondran led an outstanding performance and rehearsal.
The University of North Texas, with incredible work by DMA student Jerianne Larson - look out, world, Jerianne is a force!
*Spark and Fire was recently named a finalist for the Red Note Music Festival Large Ensemble Category
One of the creative highlights of the year was composing a piece titled "Crystalline" for harp and flute. I had the pleasure of working with Alyssa Hensley on the harp and Cassandra Eisenreich on the flute, and their performance truly brought the piece to life. This piece can be purchased digitally through my store.
My music was also featured at prestigious events this year, including the International Trombone Association Conference and the National Flute Association Conference, and as I am writing this at the Midwest Clinic, I want to thank everyone who has supported and encouraged me throughout the year.
Additionally, I've witnessed the incredible talent and diversity of projects from the young undergraduate musicians in the Mary Pappert School of Music Composition for Media Program. Their creativity amazes me, and I look forward to seeing where their musical triumphs will take them.
Lastly, West Virginia University (WVU) has quickly become a special place for me. The opportunities for growth and creativity at WVU have been invaluable, and I am excited to continue my musical endeavors there.
There are so many more moments that were special in 2023. Just look at my Instagram account to see more! The events of 2023 have emphasized the importance of treasuring every moment, embracing the unexpected, and developing resilience in the face of challenges. I eagerly await the adventures, opportunities, and connections ahead. Let us carry the lessons of the past year with us as we move forward into 2024, mindful of the beauty and resilience of the human spirit.
I must send a special thank you and shout-out to Karen and Jen of KCA. Working with them for the last few months has been transformative for me personally and professionally. Thank you for your thoughtful conversations, support, and guidance.
